Chapter Seven

Sophie

“Don't worry sweetheart, it will subside in a few minutes,” Sienna says as she pulls the empty syringe from my leg. “But there’s a lot more where that came from. Refuse my offer and you’ll lose the baby before you can even pick up the phone to call for help. Accept my offer, and you’ll go unharmed.”

I close my eyes to blink the tears away. This cannot be true. Things like this only happen in the movies.

“You have twenty-four hours. You know where to find me.” With an evil grin, she strokes my face and winks at me before she stands up to leave. She grabs her million-dollar bag and walks out of the room, murmuring something to the nurse on her way out.

I can’t do this anymore. I’m not strong enough for this. Sniffing my tears away, I press the bell next to my bed. The nurses arrive just as the cramps fade. One of them leans in over me and checks the baby’s heartbeat.

“Everything looks okay, but you need to lay still. Worrying is not good for your baby.” She pats my hand and makes sure I have access to the call button before she leaves.

I just close my eyes and let the tears flow. This is impossible. I can flee and run from the mafia for the rest of my life, betraying the man I love, or I can tell him about Sienna, risking everything, and hoping that he believes me. But even if he does, what if Sienna gets to me first and kills the baby? I don’t think Ronnie is aware of what she’s capable of. This isn’t just a baby. It’s a real miracle. If my child goes, I’ll follow.

The thoughts swirl around and around completely crippling my ability to think clearly. I’ve never been under this much stress. I don’t think I’m even fully aware of my actions when Ronnie barges in shortly after the medical staff leaves. He spends about half an hour trying to comfort me and talking to me, but even he can’t make my worries go away. How could he? It’s not like I can just tell him about Sienna. At least I know that Cassandra and Caleb are okay. When Ronnie has to run back to the office, I just continue to lay in bed, waiting for the thoughts to make some sense in my head.

“Hey there, the doctor has ordered an ultrasound.” I look up as the cheerful tech maneuvers her machine into the room and pulls me out of my brooding. I don’t even know how much time has passed since Ronnie left.

"Is there something they are worried about?"

“No, the heartbeat is great, but the doctor wants an ultrasound to make sure everything is okay. You scared us all with those cramps earlier.” She smiles as she lifts my hospital gown and squirts warm gel on my belly.

“Yes, it scared me too. This is quite the miracle baby.”

“Too bad daddy’s not here. Do you want me to wait so you can call him?”

I shake my head.
